What Are the Steps to Getting a Learner’s Permit in Texas?

  1. Submit Form DL-92 to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) to receive your Parent Taught Drivers Ed Program Guide. There is a fee of $20.
  2. Have a parent or legal guardian who is qualified to instruct the course.
  3. Sign up with Virtual Drive of Texas!
  4. Complete 6 hours of drivers ed instruction online for the Learner’s permit
  5. Pass the permit exam and receive your DE-964 for the Learner’s permit.

What do I need to take the the DPS?

  1. One proof of identify (Original or certified copy of birth certificate).
  2. Proof of Social Security Number.
  3. Proof of Texas state residency. (Parent must show 2 forms of residency)
  4. A completed Verification of Enrollment and Attendance form from High School (teens under the age of 18)
  5. Forms from course completion:
    1. DE-964 Completion Certificate
    2. Learner’s Permit Progress Report
    3. DL-90 A
    4. DL-14 A

Last but not least!

It’s test time! If you use Virtual Drive you do have the option of taking your Learner’s Permit written test online. Otherwise you can take it at the DPS when you get there. You will also be required to pass a vision exam.
